The European Union has established a European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) to facilitate the provision of medical care in Europe. This card allows you to access health professionals and hospitals in the country you are visiting, without any prior procedure, under the same conditions and at the same rates as those insured in the country.

It is recommended that you obtain the EHIC from your health insurance organization at least 20 days before your departure to France.

How it works

In France, it's common to pay in advance after a medical consultation and to be refunded afterwards. You have two options:

  • Either ask for a reimbursement from the French health insurance company
  • Or ask for a reimbursement from the health insurance organization in your country

In any case, you will have to send by post to these organizations:

- Your medical certificate or invoice issued by the health professional/hospital

- A copy of your EHIC

- Your bank statement (RIB)

The refund period depends on the organization, in general it takes 2 weeks.
