When is best to look for a place in France?

And why is it that complicated to book your accommodation?

3 things you must know about
  • High demand and strict selection: France attracts many international students. Landlords can afford to choose the most solid applications, making competition very tough.

  • Mismatch between availability and search period: Rooms are usually available from May, but most students start looking in September. This rush period creates enormous demand, reducing available options.

  • Preference for long-term rentals: Landlords prefer renting for two semesters instead of just one. Long-term contracts offer more stability, making short-term rentals less attractive.

Here are 2 options to think about:

Option 1: Start searching 2 weeks before your arrival. You might have the chance to pay the rent close to your arrival date. Most of the options will be gone.

Option 2: Begin your search a 1-3 months before your arrival. You might need to start your lease earlier than your arrival date, but it's a guaranteed way to get a spot.

Tenants who agree to book the earliest will be the first accepted.

Why do we strongly recommend option 2 ?

Based on our experience helping students find accommodation at Livinfrance, we've seen that waiting too long might leave you without many options by August.

Remember, the landlord will prefer not to leave his apartment/room empty, so he will choose the student who is ready to book as early as possible.
