Do I need a visa to study in France?

It depends on your nationality and how long you plan to stay.

  • EU, EEA (Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway) and Swiss citizens do not need a visa or a residence permit to study in France. A valid passport or national identity card is enough.
  • All other nationalities need a visa in most cases. For a programme longer than 3 months, this is a long-stay student visa (VLS-TS "étudiant"). For a course of 3 months or less, you may need a short-stay visa, depending on your nationality.

The easiest way to check your situation is the official France-Visas visa wizard. Answer a few questions and it tells you whether you need a visa, which type, and which documents to prepare.

Livinfrance's platform helps you prepare your arrival in France, from accommodation to your first administrative steps.
