Who is exempt from the CVEC?
You are exempt from paying the CVEC (€105 in 2026–2027) if you:
- receive a CROUS means-tested grant or another eligible public grant, such as a French government scholarship;
- have refugee status;
- benefit from subsidiary protection;
- are an asylum seeker with the right to remain in France.
Even if you are exempt, you must complete the process on cvec.etudiant.gouv.fr to get your free CVEC certificate. Grant holders are recognised automatically.
You are not subject to the CVEC at all if, for example, you come to France on an exchange programme (such as Erasmus+) while staying enrolled at your home university.
Refunds: if you paid and then became exempt (for example, your grant was confirmed later), request a refund on cvec.etudiant.gouv.fr between 1 September 2026 and 31 May 2027.
