Why do I need an Irrevocable Transfer Certificate?

Preparing your student visa application and wondering what an irrevocable transfer certificate (AVI) is? It is a document confirming that you will receive regular payments to support yourself in France during your studies.

It shows the consulate that the funding for your stay is arranged. However, an AVI is not required for every student: what you need depends on your situation and on the consulate handling your application.

Why is it useful for my visa application?

To study in France, you must show how you will pay for everyday costs: accommodation, food, transport and other living expenses. An AVI answers two questions clearly: how much will you receive each month, and for how long? A bank statement only shows your balance on one date; an AVI records a commitment to future payments.

How much do I need to show?

For long-stay student visa applications submitted on or after 1 August 2026, the minimum is €877.50 per month. Over 12 months: €877.50 × 12 = €10,530. Check the duration and documents required for your own application before you deposit any money.

Do I need an AVI if I already have a sponsor?

Not necessarily. Depending on your country and situation, other documents may be accepted, such as a scholarship certificate or a sponsorship letter with your sponsor's supporting documents. But having a sponsor does not exempt you from an AVI if your consulate asks for one. Check your personalised checklist on France-Visas and your consulate's instructions.

How do I get an AVI?

First check that the arrangement meets your visa requirements, then contact a bank or provider. For arrangements where the funds are deposited in advance, the steps are usually:

1. You send the documents needed to open your file.
2. You deposit the amount for the agreed period.
3. The provider issues the certificate once it has checked your file and received the funds.
4. You add the AVI to your visa application.
5. Monthly payments start according to your contract.

Before you commit, confirm the monthly amount, the period covered, the fees, the time to issue the certificate and the conditions for getting your money back (for example if your visa is refused). Livinfrance does not offer an AVI service.

Does an AVI guarantee my visa?

No. It proves funding, but the consulate assesses your whole application and makes the decision.
