🏦 To study and live in France, having an IBAN can be very useful. It allows you to receive bank transfers, pay your rent, set up direct debits, or provide your bank details to certain organisations.

With Revolut, you can open an account online and obtain an IBAN. However, the country associated with your IBAN mainly depends on your country of residence when you register.

 How do you open a Revolut account? 

You can open your account entirely online through the Revolut app.

You must be at least 18 years old and legally reside in a supported country. You can find the detailed requirements on Revolut’s official page about opening an account.

Here are the main steps:

  1. Download the Revolut app from the App Store or Google Play.
  2. Create your account using a valid phone number and email address.
  3. Enter your country and your actual residential address.
  4. Provide your personal information.
  5. Upload a valid official identity document.
  6. Complete the required identity verification, which may include taking a selfie.
  7. Provide any additional information or documents requested by Revolut.

Once your account has been opened and verified, you can view your bank details in the app. Depending on your account, these may include your IBAN, BIC or SWIFT code, and the details required to receive a bank transfer.

Can you open a Revolut account before arriving in France? 🥐

Yes, you can open a Revolut account before arriving in France, provided that you legally reside in a country where Revolut is available.

Revolut is available to residents of the European Economic Area, as well as several other countries, including the United Kingdom, Switzerland, the United States, Australia, Brazil, Japan, New Zealand and Singapore.

👉 This list may change, so remember to check whether your current country of residence is supported on Revolut’s official list.

If Revolut is not available in your current country of residence, you will generally need to wait until you move to a supported country before opening your account.

Please note that you must always provide your actual residential address. You should not declare a French address if you are not yet genuinely living in France.

Can you obtain a French IBAN directly? 🐓

If you open your Revolut account as an eligible French resident, Revolut states that a French IBAN may be assigned automatically when the account is opened.

To qualify, you must be able to declare and, if requested, prove that you genuinely reside in France. Your nationality is not the main criterion: Revolut primarily considers your country of residence and your eligibility.

If you open your account before arriving in France from another supported country, you will receive the bank details corresponding to the Revolut entity responsible for your account. You should therefore not assume that you will automatically receive a French IBAN before you live in France.
